An Organic Approach to Effects Animation
Joseph Gilland will discuss the various elements most commonly referred to as ‘special effects’ in the old school classical animation sense of the terminology, drawing directly from his book.
This includes all liquids, (a vast topic all on its own, with countless subsets of categories which I will discuss) fire and smoke, explosions, electricity, fireworks, sparks, magical ‘pixie dust’, spirits, storms, lightening, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc. Joseph will discuss the inter-related nature of many effects elements, such as smoke, water vapor, clouds, explosions and dust, all completely different effects but with very similar physics and design principles. Next up is the fundamental energy patterns that underlie all effects animation, and the extreme importance of understanding and feeling this energy’s path of action, and dissipation to final resolution.
What is an ‘organic’ approach to animating special effects? Joseph Gilland will discuss the classical technique of drawing and understanding special effects animation at great length.

Mechanics and Metaphor: Designing Independent Games
This year the OIAF is joining forces with IndieCade, a like-minded organization that focuses on independent games and works to cultivate innovation and artistry in interactive media. Join IndieCade organizer Sam Roberts for a panel discussion with several independent gamemakers. The process of making games and their meaning will be discussed. The panel will also look at how to design and exploit rule sets to create emotion, gameplay, and message. Attendees will leave with a sharpened understanding of the work indie gamemakers do, and of the critical and theoretical space behind developing games.
